The couple first clairifed to a confused commenter that it was 100 pounds of gravel they were shipped from a Philipsburg, Montana sapphire mine.

After finding 105 gemstones in the rough, the duo, along with their families and closest friends then sifted through to pick out the best ones to be sent out and have their color and clarity enhanced, a process known as heat treated.

“We FINALLY got the stones heat treated and I’m obsessed! ended up with 43 gem quality stones out of the 105ish total that were found in the gravel. The largest of which is 4 carats. Next step is to narrow down my choices and have 4 or 5 of them cut for my ring,” the poster explained under the post’s photo.

To everyone’s surprise, most Reddit users were impressed and even praised the boyfriend in the post’s comment section for his creative and cost-saving efforts.

It’s unknown how much this entire ordeal cost the couple but it had to be cheaper than the average cost of an engagement ring in the US that’s anywhere from $5,000 to $7,500.

“They are gorgeous and this has to be one of the sweetest and most original proposals I’ve ever heard of!” another gushed.

“Omg. That’s wonderful! Maybe look for a set of matching sapphires and do a set of earrings to match,” someone suggested.
