Kevin Pietersen Fires Back at Lalit Modi's 'The Hundred Will Die' Claim

Lalit Modi's bold assertion regarding England's Hundred has further added to the controversy around the competition, as the man who conceived the IPL made an audacious statement about the future of the 100-ball tournament, stating that it would not last in its present form due to a lack of long-term structural integrity and commercial potential.

Lalit Modi's Statement on The Hundred's future

The tournament, in Modi's opinion, is ridden with massive structural and commercial shortcomings. The tournament, according to Modi, is overly reliant on advertising revenue and has very little following on subscription, which, according to him, is essential to any league’s longevity.

He predicts that the league might only exist for a few years in its current form and is critical of its business model, asserting that the only thing working in the favour of the tournament is its August window. Post the August slot, however, Modi feels there is no long-term strategy and promotional drive. He further suggests that investors and broadcasters will eventually turn away looking for greater returns.

His assertion did not take much time to go viral as fans debated the former IPL chief's statement on the Hundred due to his role in establishing the most successful league in the world, the IPL.

Kevin Pietersen Responds Sharply on X

Lalit Modi's sentiments were also met by a sharp response on social media from the former England batter Kevin Pietersen. In his reply to Lalit Modi on X he commented that The Hundred would not vanish but instead metamorphose into a T20 format game in a few years' time.

This reply showed faith in the league's sustainability, and posited change and not collapse for the game in the years to come. His comment only added more to the developing argument regarding the changing face of modern franchise cricket and the future of short-format leagues in England.

His views came at a point when The Hundred seeks to improve its global presence and earlier this year conducted its inaugural auction where various young English talent received high bids. The league also benefits from franchise affiliation with a number of IPL franchises which enhance the level of attraction from around the globe.

Both ex-administrator and players have opposing views as the future of The Hundred still seems like a topic of debate in the world of cricket.
