New Delhi, Apr 19: In a bid to address the rising issue of digital arrest frauds, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to introduce an artificial intelligence-driven chatbot named “Abhay” on Monday. This innovative tool will assist individuals in verifying the legitimacy of notices they receive.

The launch will take place during the 22nd D P Kohli Memorial Lecture, which is organized by the CBI to honor its founding director, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, who will officiate the event.

According to a CBI representative, the AI chatbot, ABHAY, will empower citizens to confirm the authenticity of notices allegedly issued by the CBI. This initiative is particularly crucial in light of the increasing incidents of digital arrest frauds, providing a necessary resource for the public.

During the lecture, the CJI will discuss “Challenges of Cyber Crime - Role for Police and Judiciary” and will also present 24 Medals for Meritorious Service.

Reports indicate that numerous victims have fallen prey to scammers impersonating CBI officials, who have used fake notices to intimidate individuals, claiming they were involved in non-existent cases. These fraudsters have extorted significant sums, amounting to crores of rupees, under the guise of digital arrests.

Recently, the Supreme Court highlighted that cyber criminals have embezzled approximately Rs 54,000 crore through various scams, describing this alarming trend as akin to “robbery or dacoity.”
