Shreyas Iyer Next India T20I Captain? Report Reveals Big Update
Cricket Gully | April 19, 2026 11:40 PM CST

Shreyas Iyer is now in line to be the next captain of the T20I format according to a recent report. This comes after uncertainties continued to loom over the captaincy of current skipper Suryakumar Yadav following India’s triumphant show on the global stage.

The report reveals that selectors are keeping a keen eye on Iyer's performances and captaincy records as he stands a significant chance of taking over the reins in the shortest format.

His consistent performances at No. 4 for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026 season has enhanced his profile while he boasts an admirable leadership track record having led Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024. The 31-year-old had a terrific season for Punjab Kings in 2025 as he led them to a runner-up finish having lost the final to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Selectors Consider Iyer the Best Option

The report further indicated that the BCCI is heavily considering Iyer as the future leader of the Indian T20I team. However, this could not turn out to be straightforward, and bring him directly back into the team without any intermediate step could prove a difficult choice.

TOI quoted a BCCI source saying:

“Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It's a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway. The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition.”

Along with Iyer's name, selectors are also considering the future roadmap with crucial events like the 2027 ODI World Cup and 2028 Olympics being slated.

Suryakumar's Form Under Spotlight

Though Suryakumar captained India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, his performance as a batter had been under scrutiny. Last year, it failed to live up to expectations, with his strike rate dropping below 120, not even one half-century was registered in that year.

He picked up pace this year with 4 fifties, having scored at over 160, though his performance in crucial matches wasn't really noteworthy. During the T20 WC apart from the opening game, he scored 18 against South Africa, 18 against West Indies, 11 in the semifinal against England and a score of 0 in the final against New Zealand.

His form will face another crucial test when the Men in Blue take on England and Ireland in June-July and the selectors' decision will depend heavily on how he performs in those series.

A BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity:

"Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based."

Though head coach Gautam Gambhir is said to have lent his backing and support for the middle-order batsman to continue until the T20 WC 2028, it is the selection committee under Ajit Agarkar who will make the final decision. Given the rise of strong competition, and few other major tournaments around the corner, India's captain for the shortest format is still undecided.
