Dr. Abdul Majeed Hakim Elahi, representative of the Supreme Leader of Iran in India, was asked about the attack on two Indian flagged oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. On this he said that there is no information about any such incident. However, he definitely said that the relations between India and Iran are very strong and he hopes that if there is any problem, it will be resolved through talks.
Elahi said Iran and India have had good relations for a long time and cooperation between the two countries has been continuously growing. He also said that Iran does not want war, but wants peace. He described the talks between the Prime Minister of India and the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian as successful and said that there is good understanding between the leaders of the two countries. He also said that relations between India and Iran are thousands of years old and there is a deep connection of culture, education and civilization between the two countries.
Two Indian-flagged oil tankers were fired upon near the Strait of Hormuz near Oman. The names of these tankers have been stated as Jag Arnav and Sanmar Herald, which were carrying oil from Iraq. At present, there is a war going on in West Asia, due to which there was already concern about the supply and prices of oil. It was reported that shots were fired at both ships.
India reacted strongly after this incident. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned Iran’s ambassador to India and lodged a formal protest over the matter. Iranian Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Fatahli was summoned to the Foreign Ministry for talks with officials.
They underlined the importance India attaches to the safety of merchant ships and seafarers and reminded that Iran had previously provided safe passage to several ships visiting India, the MEA statement said. Reiterating his concern over this serious incident of firing on merchant ships, the Foreign Secretary urged the Ambassador to convey India’s view to the Iranian authorities and to resume the process of facilitating passage of ships to India from Hormuz at the earliest. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Iranian ambassador has pledged to convey these views to Iranian officials.
