Daffodils are a strong indicator of spring and add stunning colour to gardens. Added to this, daffodil bulbs naturally repel squirrels and other rodents, making them a great choice if you have had a problem with pesky small creatures who have viewed your garden bulbs as lunch in the past.

These vibrant flowers are extremely easy to grow, naturalise well and return in greater quantities year after year, given they are cared for properly. Taking to his gardening TikTok page, @joesgarden, Joe shared a "quick tip to keep daffodils flowering year after year". All you need is some clean, sharp secateurs and 10 seconds to spare.

One issue gardeners may have when growing daffodils that have bloomed the previous year is that they can come up "blind" - grow foliage but no flowers.

Avoid this by deadheading faded blooms and letting the foliage die back naturally, without tying it into a knot. This will typically need to be done from the middle to the end of April.

Joe instructed how to do so. He said, "Once the heads die back, locate the seed pod, grab your snippers and just cut."

"Leave the foliage to die back to return the energy straight back into the bulb."

Make sure to avoid tying up daffodil leaves or cutting them back while they're still green, as it could reduce flowering next year.

Keep your plants watered and fed if they've been in the pot or the ground for some time, as they will lack nutrients.

Also, if the bulbs have been planted for some years, they might be getting crowded. In that case, lift them and replant the larger, healthy bulbs, as the small bulbs might take a few years to grow to a size that will produce flowers.

As daffodils are gone by mid-spring, they should be planted alongside things that come into their own in summer, like dahlias, geraniums and peonies.
