In a stunning display, Shillong Lajong overwhelmed Aizawl FC with a decisive 6-1 victory during Match 42 of the Indian Football League 2025-26, held at the SSA Stadium in Shillong on Saturday.
Tremiki Lamurong was a standout performer, netting two goals for the home team. Other contributors included Phrangki Buam, Everbrightson Sana, Gladdy Kharbuli, and Lamlallian Vaiphei, while Lalhriatpuia managed to score a consolation goal for Aizawl. With this win, Shillong Lajong climbed to second place in the standings, amassing 17 points from nine matches, while Aizawl fell to seventh, confirming their relegation phase status.
First Half: Lajong Takes Control
Despite Aizawl's strong start, which saw them dominate the first 15 minutes with quick passing and several scoring opportunities, they were unable to convert their chances. Shillong's goalkeeper Ranit Sarkar made crucial saves, and defenders blocked multiple attempts.
The turning point came in the 26th minute when Lajong took the lead. A curling cross from left-back Saveme Tariang caught Aizawl's goalkeeper Lalhruaitluanga off guard, allowing Phrangki Buam to score.
Aizawl responded with pressure, earning several corner kicks, but failed to equalize, with Luis Rodriguez missing a header from close range. Just before halftime, Lajong doubled their lead due to another goalkeeping error, with Everbrightson Sana capitalizing on a mistake to score.
Second Half: A Goal Bonanza
The second half began with Lajong pushing forward, earning four corners but failing to score. However, Aizawl managed to pull one back shortly after the restart when Lalhriatpuia scored from a well-placed cross.
A penalty was awarded to Lajong after Phrangki Buam was fouled, and Lamlallian converted it to make it 3-1. Shortly after, Lajong scored again, taking advantage of another defensive error from Aizawl.
With three minutes remaining, Lajong added a fifth goal after a mix-up in Aizawl's defense allowed Tremiki Lamurong to score into an empty net. The scoring concluded in stoppage time when Lamurong netted his second goal, sealing a remarkable victory for Shillong Lajong.
