Lawns will stay green all summer in UK gardens if you do 1 vital task in April

Many gardeners want one thing from their lawn in summer, and that's thick, green grass that stays healthy through heatwaves and garden parties. But by the time June arrives, it is often too late to fix problems that started months earlier.

Experts say the key to a lush lawn in July and August actually begins in early spring. April in particular is seen as a crucial month for setting grass up for the growing season. While there are several jobs gardeners can tackle, specialists say one simple task can make a noticeable difference.

It does not require expensive equipment or complicated techniques. In fact, it can be done in an afternoon with the right tools.

That one vital job is dethatching. Dethatching involves gently raking out the layer of thatch and debris that builds up over winter.

Thatch is made up of dead grass, moss and decomposing stems that sit between the soil and the visible blades of grass.

A thin layer is normal and even helpful. But when it becomes too thick, it can stop water, air and nutrients from reaching the roots. The result is often a spongy, unhealthy lawn.

Jason McCausland, National Technical Director at Weed Man, told Homes & Gardens: "This [dethatching] will remove a lot of the thatch and debris that has accumulated over the winter.

"This ensures your lawn is ready and able to soak up the sun, water, and nutrients it needs to thrive in the summer."

Dethatching is lighter than scarifying, which is a deeper and more aggressive process.

Experts recommend dethatching for routine maintenance, while scarifying may be needed if there is a severe build-up.

Theresa Smith, SVP at NaturaLawn, also stressed that it's important to take care of your garden soil.

She explained: "A beautiful lawn starts with the soil. It will help you understand your soil (soil pH, nutrient levels, organic matter content, and soil type) and what nutrients and treatments will help it thrive all summer long.

"April is a great time to do a soil test because it should inform every other task. This will help you use the right type of treatments and right amounts - saving you from wasting products and money."

Watering is also important once temperatures begin to rise. Don Chouinard, a lawn irrigation expert from Irrigreen, said: "April is an ideal time to establish this routine as your lawn enters its active growing season.

"Maintaining consistent moisture early on helps prevent common issues like disease, root rot from overwatering, and weak root systems caused by inconsistent irrigation."

Lawns typically need around an inch of water per week. Experts say deep, infrequent watering is better than light daily applications.

Mr McCausland also advised fertilising in April, saying: "It is time to apply a slow-release granular fertiliser to give the lawn a boost and help ensure a green and lush lawn all summer."
