A UK city has been named among the best places to retire in Britain. As well as being located on the coast, the city boasts affordable housing, low crime rates, a range of amenities and a tight-knit community atmosphere.
Rest Less, a publication designed for people aged over 50, named Aberdeen as one of the best places to retire in the UK. The city is culturally rich, with a number of theatres and museums on offer, and benefits from having extensive parks and shopping areas. It is considered a top-tier retirement destination compared to some other major cities across Britain.
Rest Less said: "Aberdeen regularly ranks as one of the UK's most affordable places to retire, and this year has been named Scotland's most affordable city for solo living.
"But research suggests that what really sets it apart is how it combines low costs with a genuinely good quality of life. While house prices have surged across much of the UK in recent years, Aberdeen's market has remained relatively stable. Wages are solid, but property prices remain comparatively low, which is rare."
According to the site, average one to two bed homes in Aberdeen cost around £115,000. The latest data from RightMove shows the average home sells for £175,612 in the city, with flats fetching £101,516, terraced properties going for £182,495 and semi-detached houses going for an average of £223,124.
Rest Less added: "It's not just housing, either; regularly ranks are noticeably lower than in many UK cities, helping your pension stretch further. Supermarkets often price staples below the UK average, and local fishmongers and markets mean fresh seafood can be surprisingly affordable.
"Dining out is reasonable, too; you can find lunch deals for around £10-£12 in the city centre. While energy bills can be higher in colder months, overall living costs are still often lower than in southern cities."
The site also notes Aberdeen's picturesque coastal setting, plethora of green spaces, and range of theatres and galleries. The city is also fairly safe, with crime rates lower than many other urban areas in the UK.
It boasts a range of historic buildings and modern amenities, as well as a tigh-knit community feel. Aberdeen also benefits from a number of high-quality schools, universities and a strong job market.
Rest Less concluded: "While it's more remote than other UK cities - and often colder and greyer, too - for value and liveability, it's difficult to beat."
