Formula 1 has unveiled plans to make a grand return to South Korea in 2028. The news comes 13 years after the Korean Grand Prix was dropped from the F1 circuit due to costs and a lack of local interest - just three years after its debut on the circuit.
However, the South Korean city of Incheon has been dubbed financially viable to host a race following, putting to bed a lengthy wait for the sport's return to the East Asian nation. Speaking at a press conference at City Hall, Mayor Yoo Jeoing-bok explained that the green light had been given to pursue a new race destination. While the Korean GP initially took place in Yeongam, Songdo International City is being looked at as a potential destination for a future race, according to Incheon Ilbo.
Should plans be approved, a street circuit would be used near the Songdo Moonlight Festival Park, with existing public roads utilised. At 4,960 meters, drivers would be able to hit speeds of up to 209 mph, in line with modern Formula 1 standards.
The layout design is being led by Hermann Tilke's firm, which has previously created circuits in Sepang and Shanghai, as well as street tracks in Las Vegas and Baku. The designer also had a major part in creating the Korea International Circuit which held F1 events between 2010 and 2013.
Officials in Incheon city claim that the event will bring money to the locality, as they hope to bring in up to 400,000 visitors over a three-day race weekend. The plan reads: "It is possible to link the F1 Grand Prix, which has developed into a form of entertainment, with K-culture.

"We expect to hold various cultural performances, such as inviting world-famous artists, to elevate Incheon's cultural and tourism infrastructure to a world-class standard."
At the time of writing, Formula 1 travels to 24 locations worldwide, with a number of events taking place in Asia. Kimi Antonelli saw back-to-back success in China and Japan earlier this season, and will undoubtedly be looking for more of the same when the Singapore Grand Prix takes place in October.
Vietnam was supposed to be included on the circuit in 2020, but the event was ultimately cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It has not returned to the calendar since.
It comes as Formula 1 is currently enduring a month-long lay-off after events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. A statement announcing the move read: "After careful evaluations, due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East region, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will not take place in April.
"While several alternatives were considered, it was ultimately decided that no substitutions will be made in April. The Formula 2, Formula 3 and F1 ACADEMY rounds will also not take place during their scheduled times. The decision has been taken in full consultation with the FIA and respective promoters."
The next event comes in the form of the Miami Grand Prix. That race will get underway at the Miami International Autodrome come Sunday, May 3.
