A coastal destination in Spain is attracting interest for featuring the longest seafront promenade in Europe, offering over 26 kilometres of continuous ocean views, beaches and stopping points along the route. The path spans the island of Lanzarote, starting in the well-known resort of Puerto del Carmen and extending through to Costa Teguise. Throughout the journey, visitors can expect expansive Atlantic views, sheltered bays and an extensive selection of restaurants and bars.
With average highs of approximately 24C in May, the island provides a warm-weather getaway before the peak summer crowds descend, making it an attractive option for walkers, runners and cyclists alike. The route, which extends for more than 26 kilometres, has emerged as a significant draw owing to its accessibility and variety. It connects numerous key tourist zones while delivering a continuous path dotted with viewpoints and rest areas.
According to local authorities, the promenade was never conceived as a single grand scheme, instead developing incrementally to serve the needs of residents before ultimately attaining record-breaking recognition.
The Canary Islands Government explains that there was never a formal project for the promenade. It was built gradually to meet the needs of local residents, eventually evolving into a route that effectively "stumbled upon" this world record. The 26-kilometre promenade has since emerged as a major tourist attraction and is particularly popular for cycling - a pastime also widely enjoyed in A Coruña, which is anticipated to adopt similar developments in the future.
For many years, numerous people assumed that A Coruña held the world record. The city's waterfront pathway extends for approximately 13 kilometres along a succession of urban beaches, historic landmarks and cultural sites, establishing it as one of the most distinctive coastal routes in northern Spain.
This assertion that A Coruña boasted the world's longest seafront promenade gathered momentum following decades of construction efforts, with the complete stretch finalised in 2011. At that point, the Galician city did indeed briefly hold the title before being surpassed.
Nevertheless, that status changed in 2016 when development work in Lanzarote expanded its coastal pathway significantly, producing a promenade that now exceeds twice the length of its mainland counterpart.
Despite relinquishing the record, A Coruña's waterfront continues to be a major attraction, showcasing features such as the ancient Tower of Hercules - widely recognised as the oldest functioning Roman lighthouse - alongside beaches including Riazor and Orzán.
Beyond these shores, other notable promenades include the Usedom Promenade, which stretches 12 kilometres across two nations, and the Atlantic City Boardwalk, among the most famous waterfront walks in the United States. While discussion persists regarding which promenade provides the best overall experience, there is little doubt that Lanzarote's extensive coastal route - combined with its year-round sunshine - establishes it as one of Europe's leading seaside destinations.
