Dehradun: Uttarakhand is bracing for a fresh spell of rain and snowfall starting April 16. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain in several hilly districts and heavy snowfall in higher altitudes above 4,000 meters. A yellow alert has been issued for multiple districts between April 17 and 21.
Kedarnath has already witnessed its fifth snowfall of the season in April, while Badrinath Dham is covered in a thick blanket of snow. This has slowed down reconstruction work ahead of the Char Dham Yatra, which begins on April 19. Despite the disruption, the snow has added breathtaking beauty to the shrines.
Western disturbance active
According to the Meteorological Center, a new western disturbance will become active from April 16. Its impact will be felt in districts like Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Areas above 4,000 meters may see heavy snowfall, while lower regions will experience light drizzle and pleasant weather.
Districts likely to see rain
On April 16, rain is expected in Nainital, Rudraprayag, Almora, Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, and Chamoli. On April 17, thunder and lightning may occur in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. The yellow alert warns of gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h, urging people to stay indoors and avoid trees or electric poles during bad weather.
Impact on Char Dham Yatra
The Char Dham Yatra will begin with the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines on April 19. Authorities are working on snow clearance at Kedarnath and Badrinath to ensure safe passage for devotees. Pilgrims have been advised to carry warm clothing and essential medicines, as the cold remains severe in mornings and evenings.
Weather in plains
In the plains, including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Haldwani, daytime temperatures are rising, reaching 32–35°C. Nights and mornings remain slightly cool. The IMD predicts that temperatures in the plains may rise by 2–4°C over the next few days, increasing the heat further.
Concerns for farmers
The IMD has also indicated that this year’s monsoon may be below average due to the El Niño effect. This could negatively impact agriculture in Uttarakhand. However, the pre-monsoon rains will help reduce forest fire risks, offering some relief to the environment.
Temperature forecast at a glance:
– Plains: Maximum 35°C, Minimum 17–20°C
– Hilly areas: Maximum 15–22°C, Minimum 5–10°C
– Ultra-high altitude (4000m+): Temperatures may drop below zero
With rain, snowfall, and strong winds expected from April 16, Uttarakhand faces weather challenges ahead of the Char Dham Yatra. While the plains heat up, the mountains brace for snow and rain. Pilgrims and farmers alike must prepare for changing conditions in the coming days.
