New Delhi: Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League by beating six-time winners Liverpool. With this, PSG’s grip on the European club soccer’s biggest competition continues to remain strong.
A 2-0 victory at Anfield sealed a 4-0 aggregate victory and moved PSG a step closer to becoming only the second club to retain the trophy in the modern era after all-time king of Europe Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele scored two goals in the second half to destroy Liverpool’s fight and book a semis clash against either Bayern Munich or Madrid.
Dembele ousts Liverpool with two clinical goalsDembele, who had been guilty of wasting chances in the first leg, dispatched his opening goal in the match with utmost precision nestling in the bottom corner. His second goal was even more clinical from the close range as he utilised on both the opportunities in the second half.
Liverpool had been dominated in Paris last week. But the Merseyside club knows all about comebacks in this competition. PSG is out to make history after ending its long wait to conquer Europe for the first time last year.
It is the second time in as many seasons that the French giant has knocked out Liverpool, which was in search of another famous Champions League comeback and dominated PSG for periods.
‘It’s difficult to defend the Champions League, we know that,’ said coach Luis Enrique. ‘We are here again and we need to make the most of these opportunities.’

The match started like Barca were going to clinch it after Lamine Yamal scored an early goal and Ferran Torres topped it up with another one in next 20 minutes.
But Ademola Lookman pulled one back for Atletico to give them the lead in the tie and Eric Garcia saw red for denying a goal-scoring opportunity as Barcelona suffered the same fate as the first leg.
The tie ended 3-2 on aggregate, with Barcelona crashing out again.
