Court refused to grant interim relief

The Supreme Court of India refused to grant interim permission to vote to those whose names were removed during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Lakhs of appeals still pending

During the hearing, All India Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee told the court that around 16 lakh appeals have been filed and argued that these voters should be allowed to cast their votes.

However, Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the total number of appeals has reached almost 34 lakh, which shows the seriousness of the issue.

Chief Justice gave a clear answer

Rejecting this demand, Chief Justice Surya Kant said that it is not possible to give such permission at this stage. He said that if any such step is taken, it may affect the stability of the electoral process.

The Election Commission of India has already frozen the voter list in the state, meaning no new names can be added without a direct order from the Supreme Court. To resolve the issue, 19 appellate tribunals have been created in the state, which will look after around 27 lakh pending cases.

The petition was declared ‘premature’

The court termed the petition filed by 13 people as “premature”. The Court directed the petitioners to approach the Appellate Tribunal before seeking relief from the Supreme Court. The bench also clarified that it has not made any comment on the merits of the case.
