Read Auto Desk. India’s automobile sector ended the fiscal year on a strong note, according to data released Tuesday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. In March 2026, key segments of vehicles recorded strong double-digit sales growth. This growth was led by the two-wheeler segment, which recorded the highest growth. This reflects strong demand across categories and positive momentum across the auto industry.
Boom in sales of passenger vehicles
In March 2026, sales of passenger vehicles increased by 16 percent compared to last year. Total sales reached 4,42,460 units, compared to 3,81,358 units in the same month last year. This growth reflects continued consumer demand and strong availability of new models from various manufacturers.
Two-wheeler segment drives growth
The two-wheeler segment emerged as the main driver of growth. Its sales grew rapidly to 19,76,128 units, a growth of 19.3 percent as compared to 16,56,939 units sold in March 2025.
Scooters overtake motorcycles
In the two-wheeler category, scooters overtook motorcycles in terms of growth rate. Scooter sales increased by 29.8 percent to 7,61,422 units as against 5,86,485 units in the same period last year. At the same time, sales of motorcycles grew at a relatively slow pace of 12.9 percent. It increased to 11,68,514 units as compared to 10,35,273 units in March 2025.
Strong performance of three-wheeler segment
The three-wheeler segment also performed strongly this month. Sales in this category increased by 21.4 percent to 76,273 units. In the same month last year it was 62,813 units.
Positive end of financial year
Thanks to this strong performance in March, the automobile sector has ended the financial year on a positive note. During this period, good growth trends have been seen in many segments. However, this data does not include sales figures for luxury car makers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Volvo.
These latest figures indicate continued momentum in India’s auto sector, driven primarily by recovery in demand and a wide range of products available across categories.
