Sent Money to the Wrong Account via UPI? Don’t Panic—Follow These Steps to Get Your Funds Back

UPI Payment: In today’s world, everyone uses UPI for payments. However, if your money accidentally ends up in the wrong account, it is crucial to take immediate corrective action rather than panicking. Here are some essential points you need to know.

UPI Payment: Technology has made our lives significantly easier in modern times. India is making strides in every sector. When it comes to UPI payments, they have made our daily routines far more convenient than ever before. We no longer need to carry cash with us at all times, as UPI payments are now accepted everywhere—from street-side vegetable vendors to large retail stores. However, while this facility is fast and convenient, it also carries an inherent risk of errors. Often, due to haste or a minor oversight, money gets transferred to the wrong person’s account. The question then arises: what steps should be taken in such a situation to recover the money?

What Should You Do First?

Let’s look at the immediate steps you should take if you have accidentally sent money to someone:

  • Try to contact that person directly.
  • Using the contact details you have, calmly explain to them that the money was sent by mistake.
  • In many instances, people honestly return the funds.
  • Immediately Inform Your Bank

What should you do if the recipient refuses to listen, provides no response, or declines to return the money?

  • First, without wasting any time, notify your bank.
  • Second, go to your UPI app and select the “Report Issue” or “Raise Complaint” option.
  • This creates a formal record of your complaint, which will be useful for future reference.
  • You can also choose to file a complaint through the BHIM app or the NPCI website.
  • Escalate the Complaint

If you do not receive a prompt resolution from your bank, you can escalate your complaint to higher-ranking bank officials. Every bank has a grievance redressal mechanism where a Nodal Officer or a senior team handles such cases. While this process may seem a bit lengthy, it is absolutely essential. File a Complaint Beyond the Bank

If no action is taken even after these steps, you can file a complaint through the RBI’s Complaint Management System. Under this system, you can request an investigation into your case by submitting an application under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.

An Important Point to Note

It is crucial to understand that, despite all your efforts, there is no guarantee that you will definitely recover your money. If the recipient explicitly refuses to return the funds—and provided that no fraud is involved in the transaction—the bank cannot forcibly reverse the transaction. At this stage, the matter becomes a legal issue. Caution is paramount when using UPI. Always carefully verify the UPI ID and the recipient’s name before sending money. If you are transferring a large sum, transfer a small amount first to confirm the details. This simple precaution can save you from significant trouble.
