Toyota is preparing to bring the Corolla nameplate back to India in a brand-new avatar. While the Corolla was previously known as a premium sedan, its return will be in the form of a rugged and stylish SUV called the Corolla Cross. This new model is expected to launch between 2028 and 2029, marking a significant move for Toyota Kirloskar Motor as they look to fill a major gap in their current vehicle line-up.
The project is internally known as 340D. It was previously put on hold because the company needed to ensure the car would be both technically and commercially successful in the Indian market.
Now, the project is back on track and will be a central part of Toyota’s massive manufacturing expansion. The company is investing approximately 3,300 crore rupees to increase production capacity at its Bidadi facility, which will eventually produce this SUV.
One of the biggest changes for the Indian version of the Corolla Cross is the seating layout. While the version sold in other countries is a five-seater, the Indian model is being redesigned as a seven-seater.

This requires engineers to stretch the wheelbase of the car by about 150mm. This extra length is necessary to fit a third row of seats and provide enough legroom for larger families. This engineering challenge is one of the main reasons the car will take until 2028 to reach showrooms.

The Corolla Cross will be built on the TNGA-C platform, which is the same high-quality foundation used for the Innova Hycross. Because it uses this platform, the SUV will likely feature a 2.0-liter strong hybrid engine.
This system uses both a petrol engine and an electric motor to provide high fuel efficiency, which is a major priority for Indian car buyers. By producing these engines locally, Toyota can keep the cost of the vehicle lower than if they imported the parts from abroad.
In terms of market positioning, this SUV will sit in the empty space between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the more expensive Fortuner. Currently, there is a large price gap between twenty lakh and thirty-five lakh rupees where Toyota does not have a dedicated SUV.

The Corolla Cross will fill this void, competing directly with popular vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and the Tata Safari. It is designed for people who want the prestige of the Corolla brand but in a larger and more practical SUV body style.
The long wait until 2028 is tied to Toyota’s industrial strategy. The car will be one of the first major products to roll out of the company’s third production plant. By waiting a few years, Toyota can ensure that most of the car’s components are made in India.
This localization is the only way to offer a premium vehicle at a price that can compete with brands like Mahindra and Tata. When it finally arrives, the Corolla Cross will serve as a modern successor to the old Corolla Altis sedan, bringing back a legendary name for a new generation of Indian drivers.
