Green Party leader Zack Polanski is at it again and it is no laughing matter. The man who once claimed to be able to enlarge a woman's breasts through hypnosis has now turned his party's attention to trying to reduce the number of cars on our roads in a set of measures that would be a brutal persecution of the motorist. His party's proposals would be laughable if they did not prove that those on the left of politics are hellbent in reducing freedom of choice if it is something they do not like. This kind of behaviour is dictatorial at best and sinister at worst.
The Greens would reduce the speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways from 70mph to 55mph - anyone who has actually driven on the roads of Britain will tell you that this is a surefire way of creating more, not less congestion. But their obsession with dictating to people how to live their lives gets even worse with their wish to impose a 20mph speed limit on all roads in towns across the country. This has been tried before in Wales when the Labour administration reduced the default speed limit from 30mph to 20mph across the country in 2023.
A year later the Welsh Government was forced into a U-turn following a public backlash and councils consulted with local residents on which roads should revert back to the original limit - this resulted in many roads in towns and cities returning to the 30mph restriction. Typically, for a party of the left, the Greens would whack up taxes on motoring which would create a situation where only the wealthiest would be able to afford to drive a car.
If you further increase road tax or fuel duty, then motoring simply becomes a luxury for those that have the spare cash to absorb the increases while others who do not are left wanting. For a political party that is supposed to believe in equality this is hypocritical and shows just how flawed their thinking is.
They point out that by making motoring more expensive, people will look at using public transport or active travel (walking and cycling) to get about, but this mindset is synonymous with the metropolitan political elite bubble.
Green Party MPs in their strongholds such as Brighton and Bristol might have decent public transport links or feel happy to hop on a bike but tell that to someone in a rural part of the country and they will rightly laugh in your face as it is simply not an option.
For a vast number of people, the car is a necessity, not a privilege. Aside from driving a car out of necessity or indeed pleasure - these proposals would also batter the thousands of small businesses across the country.
Plumbers, electricians, decorators, florists, delivery drivers and other grafters would see their costs increase significantly just because their line of work meant they needed to drive a van as part of their livelihood. This would either result in the increased costs passed onto you and I or businesses simply give up as it would become too expensive to continue.
On top of all of this, the Greens want to make driving tests harder and make drivers retake it every five years. Once again, this shows how out of touch the party is with the real world when you look at the current six-month wait to get a driving test slot - under their measures that wait would get longer.
The worst weapon in their arsenal of anti-motoring measures is the declaration that not only would parking spaces be "steadily reduced," but to make people pay to park outside their homes.
Such a barmy idea would only result in those car owners concreting over their front gardens so they would be able to park on their own property to avoid such pernicious charges. For a political party that is supposed to care about the environment, they have clearly not given this an ounce of consideration, or possibly they have - but prefer instead to revel in the politics of envy and division.
Under zany Zack's leadership, the Green Party is currently enjoying decent support in voting surveys and is rubbing shoulders alongside the Tories and Reform UK in the upper part of some polls. They have definitely usurped the Liberal Democrats as the party of protest, but people should be careful what they wish for.
If the Greens got to power, we would end up peddling around the country in Flintstones-style cars whilst having our pockets picked for the privilege - that is not a country that anyone sane would want to live in.
