In a bustling area of Katihar, a shocking incident unfolded when cunning thieves disguised as police officers executed a significant robbery. By posing as law enforcement, these fraudsters deceived an elderly woman with false promises of safety and made off with gold jewelry worth lakhs in broad daylight.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place in the busy market area of Katihar, creating a wave of panic among the locals. The entire episode was captured on a nearby CCTV camera, which has since heightened the sense of fear in the community. Let's delve into how the con artists ensnared their victim.
How the Thieves Deceived Their Victim
Reports indicate that the crime occurred within the jurisdiction of the local police station. The 58-year-old victim, Sheila Agarwal, had stepped outside to dispose of some trash when a young man approached her. He informed her that an officer was waiting nearby to speak with her. Just a short distance away stood a masked individual who claimed to be a police officer.
Creating Fear and Swift Maneuvers
The impersonator instilled fear in the woman, warning her about the rising incidents of theft in the city and questioned why she was wearing so much jewelry in public. Alarmed, Sheila removed her gold chain and bangles. The thieves cleverly pretended to wrap the jewelry in a piece of paper and handed her a small packet. Upon returning home and opening the packet, Sheila was devastated to find only fake items inside instead of her real jewelry.
Value of the Stolen Jewelry
The stolen jewelry was estimated to weigh between 8 to 9 bhari (units), valued in the lakhs. Three criminals were involved in this incident, arriving on a hunter motorcycle, which they used to flee the scene.
Police Response
A case has been registered at the local police station. Authorities are currently scrutinizing the CCTV footage to identify the motorcycle's license plate number and the faces of the suspects.
