Anti-fascist campaigners are preparing to hold a counter-demonstration in response to a march by a flag campaign group. Raise the Colours Sheffield, believed to be part of the wider Raise the Colours movement, is preparing to march through the Yorkshire city centre on June 13.

Sheffield Communities Against Racism & Fascism has announced it will hold a counter-demonstration on the same day, according to reports. The Raise the Colours movement began last summer and saw hundreds of Union and St George's flags put up across the country. Activists said the displaying of the flags, often on lampposts and bridges, is patriotic, while critics have accused them of sowing division amid heightened tensions over immigration.

Raise the Colours Sheffield said in a post on Facebook that its event in June will be "peaceful" and urged attendees to bring flags, megaphones and music, The Star reports.

The post calls on people to be "loud and proud". "Don't miss it, be counted," it adds.

The march is set to begin in the Peace Gardens at midday and end at a hotel on Blonk Street, Wicker.

It reportedly comes after a protest outside Sheffield station earlier this month to "save our children's futures".

Around 70 are believed to have taken part in the protest, while some 200 anti-fascists gathered in opposition, according to The Star.

Sheffield Communities Against Racism & Fascism claimed the march in June will end up at a hotel being used to house asylum seekers.
