New Delhi: The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is likely to have 17 sporting disciplines with two indigenous Indian sports apart from cricket and hockey, Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Monday.
This year’s edition of the quadrennial event, to be held at Glasgow, would be a 10-sport affair due to cost issues and wouldn’t have India’s core medal sports like shooting, wrestling, and badminton.
“Kabaddi, Mallakhamb, Kho-Kho, and Yoga are under consideration from among our indigenous sports. Two of them should make the cut. Both cricket and hockey will be there,” Mandaviya said on Monday.
A delegation of Commonwealth Sport, led by its president Donald Rukare, CEO Katie Sadleir, director of games and assurance Darren Hall, director of sport Ann-Louise Morgan, and major events expert Neil Carney reviewed preparation for Ahmedabad.
They also met Mandaviya to discuss timelines for smooth delivery of the event and effective planning for its legacy nd utilisation of infrastructure after conclusion of the Games.
“Commonwealth Sport has gone back with a very good impression of India and its initiatives like the Khelo India Scheme, that crossed 60,000 athletes, representing over 30 states and Union Territories,” Mandaviya said.
