Why Bamboo Not Burned: Wood is used in many auspicious and inauspicious purposes in our life. Like home puja, yagya or funeral. But have you ever noticed that bamboo wood is not seen burning anywhere?

This is not a coincidence, but there are religious and practical beliefs behind it.

Place of bamboo in scriptures and tradition

In Indian culture, bamboo is considered a symbol of family growth and continuity of life. The tradition of burying the umbilical cord near bamboo at the time of birth is also considered to be related to this feeling. Bamboo is used in making the bier during funeral rites, but bamboo is not burnt in the pyre. According to classical beliefs, burning bamboo is considered inappropriate.

Is there any scientific reason behind this?

Some people believe that some heavy metal elements can be found in bamboo, and the smoke emanating from it when burnt can be harmful to health. It is also said that the chemicals used in incense sticks made of bamboo can enter the body through inhalation when burnt. However, there is no uniform consensus in the scientific community on these claims, so they should be interpreted with caution.

Agarbatti vs Incense: Classical View

In Hindu scriptures, there is mention of incense, lamp and naivedya during the puja ritual, but there is no direct description of incense sticks. Traditional incense was made from natural materials and its purpose was considered to purify the atmosphere.

The tradition of not burning bamboo wood is linked to religious beliefs, cultural symbols and practical thinking. With time, many things got added to the tradition, but before accepting anything, it is important to understand its meaning, context and effect on health. Following tradition with balance and understanding is the best path.
