The United States military has revealed specifics regarding its upcoming blockade aimed at Iran, following unsuccessful discussions between US and Iranian representatives in Islamabad. A statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that the blockade is set to commence on April 13 at 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT), as per a presidential directive. This action follows President Donald Trump's announcement that the US would initiate a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after negotiations did not yield positive outcomes.
CENTCOM clarified that the blockade will encompass all maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports, and it will be enforced uniformly against vessels from all nations. This includes ships navigating to and from Iranian ports situated along the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
The statement highlighted that the restrictions are not confined to specific countries; rather, they will affect vessels from any nation that are either entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal regions. Consequently, commercial and other maritime activities associated with Iran could be impacted, irrespective of their origin.
However, CENTCOM reassured that the blockade will not obstruct vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz if they are en route to or from ports outside Iran. "CENTCOM forces will not hinder freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports," the statement emphasized.
Further instructions are anticipated to be provided to commercial mariners prior to the blockade's implementation. Mariners are encouraged to keep an eye on official "Notice to Mariners" broadcasts and to maintain communication with US naval forces on bridge-to-bridge channel 16 while operating in the Gulf of Oman and in proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
This development signifies a notable escalation in the ongoing tensions, as the US takes steps to enforce maritime restrictions directly related to Iranian ports while ensuring that other international shipping routes remain open.
