Mumbai: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at 92, marking the end of an era in Indian music. In an interview to News9Live, actor and assistant director Tariq Khan remembered her as a reigning queen whose voice defined generations.
“She was simply outstanding,” he said, recalling the magic of Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko. The song, he noted, was an audience favourite that always demanded a “once more” from fans. While Lata Mangeshkar had her own distinct style, he believes Asha Bhosle commanded her own space. “Lata Mangeshkar had her own style but Asha Bhosle was a reigning queen.”
Tariq shared that their meetings were rare but memorable. She would visit his uncle’s house along with RD Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri. The last time he met her was at a Dangal party at The Taj Lands End. “I went and touched her feet,” he recalled. She recognised him instantly and asked whether he was the same Tariq who never sat still, always restless and jumping around. “She remembered,” he said warmly.
He also reflected on her long association with filmmaker Nasir Hussain, describing it as a significant professional bond. Speaking about Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, he clarified that it was picturised on Vijay Arora, but he was present during the shoot as he was assisting his uncle on Yaadon Ki Baaraat.
For Tariq, Asha Bhosle was not just a legend but family. “Asha ji was like family,” he said, adding that he considers Teesri Manzil a turning point. “I think Teesri Manzil onwards was the peak of her career.”
He struggled to find words to define her artistry. “She was simply extraordinary. There’s no word for her talent. She could do anything effortlessly.” He also admired her discipline, noting that she was very careful about her throat and would drink warm masala chai. “Those people really had dedication. I admire her.”
As he signed off, his message was simple and heartfelt: “May her soul rest in peace.”
