Will BCCI take action against Romi Bhinder?

BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has said that this matter will be investigated. He clarified that some team officials are allowed to keep phones in the dugout, but not to use them. Saikia said in an interview to Times of India, 'We have to thoroughly investigate where the incident actually happened and whether the phone was used. We will conduct an internal investigation before reaching any conclusion. We cannot take any action based on what is said.

However, the matter has not yet reached the IPL Governing Council. BCCI is preparing to complete its investigation soon and take a concrete decision, because the next match of Rajasthan Royals is to be played against Sunrisers Hyderabad soon.

What does the PMOA rule say?

The root of the controversy lies in the PMOA protocol (Players and Match Officials Area Protocol), which strictly prohibits the use of mobile phones in the dugout. The dugout is considered part of the players' and match officials' area, where anti-corruption rules apply. When during this incident, Romi Bhinder was seen looking at the phone in the dugout and young player Vaibhav Suryavanshi was also looking at his phone screen.

In such a situation, the investigation will now proceed based on the report of the match referee and the input of Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officials. The board can confiscate the phone, scan it, interrogate nearby players and investigate other evidence. Depending on the severity of the violation, there may be a fine, match match or some other punishment.
