From early struggles after her father’s death to becoming a global musical icon, her journey remained unmatched.

Asha Bhosle passes away at 92
The passing of Asha Bhosle has left a deep silence in Indian music. The legendary singer, whose voice travelled across decades and genres, died at the age of 92 after being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. She had been dealing with cardiac and respiratory complications, which later led to multi-organ failure. With her death, one of the last towering figures of classic Hindi film music is gone, and for many listeners, it feels like the end of a very long and personal musical journey.

Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra, Asha Bhosle was the daughter of noted classical singer Dinanath Mangeshkar. Life changed early for her when her father passed away while she was still a child. At just nine years old, she stepped into singing and acting to support the family, alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar.

She began her career with Marathi films and soon moved into Hindi cinema. Her early work included songs in films like Majha Bal (1943) and Chunariya (1948). These beginnings were modest, but they laid the base for what would later become one of the longest and most diverse careers in music.

Guinness World Record for most recordings

One of the most remarkable recognitions in her career came in 2011, when Asha Bhosle’s name was entered into the Guinness World Records. She was acknowledged as the artist with the highest number of studio recordings in music history.

Over the years, she recorded more than 11,000 songs, including solos, duets and chorus numbers, in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. This achievement was not just about numbers, but also about range. From ghazals and classical compositions to pop and cabaret-style songs, she moved across styles with ease.

Speaking after receiving the honour at an Asian awards function in London, she said, “Today, I truly feel I am a world recognised singer. I always knew I have the maximum number of songs to my credit, still I never said anything all this while.” She also credited music researcher Vishwas Nerurkar for compiling her work and helping secure the recognition, adding, “Vishwas Nerurkar found out about all my songs and gave the correct information to Guinness World Records, because of whom I got this title.”

Career filled with collaborations and hits

Asha Bhosle’s journey in Hindi cinema saw important collaborations with composers like O. P. Nayyar and later with R. D. Burman, whom she married. Their work together produced many well-known songs and soundtracks that remain popular even today.

Her voice became part of iconic tracks such as Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dum Maro Dum, and Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko. She also received critical acclaim for songs in films like Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat, winning National Film Awards for her performances.

Awards and recognition

Throughout her long career, Asha Bhosle received several honours. She was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, one of India’s highest recognitions in cinema. She also received the Padma Shri in 1997 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 from the Government of India.

Apart from these, she won multiple Filmfare Awards before being given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Her contribution went beyond playback singing, as she also experimented with independent music and even stepped into acting later in life.

Even in her later years, Asha Bhosle continued to explore music and creative work. She composed an album and eventually appeared on screen in the film Mai, showing that age did not slow her down much.

Her last rites are expected to be performed with full state honours in Mumbai. For fans, her songs remain a constant presence, playing across radios, playlists and memories.
