Travel between religious places in Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand may soon become much faster. For this, plans are being discussed to extend Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to Haridwar and Rishikesh. This proposed expansion aims to extend the existing Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor further north, which could bring a major change in connectivity between NCR and major religious and tourist destinations. According to The Tribune report, if this plan is implemented, the travel time from Delhi-NCR and Ghaziabad to Rishikesh may reduce to just 2.25 to 3 hours. Currently, the operational Namo Bharat Corridor connects Delhi to Meerut, significantly reducing the travel time between the two cities. The proposed extension will start from Modipuram in Meerut and run along National Highway 58, passing through several major towns before reaching Haridwar and Rishikesh.
Namo Bharat will connect these areas
According to The Tribune, the central government is considering this move and it could prove to be a major leap in the regional transport infrastructure. This expansion is expected to give a big boost to tourism, real estate and local economies in Western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The main stations being evaluated are Daurala, Sakoti, Khatauli and Purkaji, which are close to the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand border. This route will pass through Roorkee and finally end at Jwalapur in Haridwar and Rishikesh. Officials believe that better connectivity will not only make travel faster but also provide a reliable alternative to congested highways, especially during peak tourist seasons and religious events. This corridor is likely to pass through many important towns, which will increase accessibility and economic activities in these areas.
Talk between Dhami and Khattar
According to the report, the proposal has gained momentum after high-level discussions between Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, in which expansion of the rapid rail network was a major agenda. The project could redefine travel patterns, making weekend trips and pilgrimages more convenient for NCR residents. This may also increase the demand for hospitality and accommodation in cities like Haridwar and Rishikesh. However, the project is still in the planning stage, and will require a detailed feasibility study, funding approval and environmental clearance before work can begin. If approved, this extension will mark a significant milestone in India's efforts towards high-speed regional connectivity, bringing the Himalayan foothills just a few hours away from Delhi-NCR.
