Government employees did not get relief, there was no change in GPF rate

An important news has come out for government employees. The Finance Ministry has announced the interest rate of General Provident Fund (GPF) for the quarter April to June 2026. It is a matter of relief that this time also there has been no change in the interest rate and it has been maintained at 7.1% like before.

According to the Finance Ministry, from April 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026, GPF and all similar funds related to it will get 7.1% annual interest. This rate has remained constant for the last several quarters. That means there will be no change in returns for government employees this time too.

On which funds is this rate applicable?

This interest rate is not limited to GPF only, but also applies to many other government provident funds. These include Central Services GPF, All India Services Provident Fund, Railways and Defense related provident funds. That means lakhs of employees working in different departments will get interest at this rate.

What is GPF and why is it special?

General Provident Fund is a type of savings plan, which is only for government employees. In this, employees deposit a part of their salary every month. With time, interest keeps getting added on it and at the time of retirement, the entire amount is received together. It is considered a safe and reliable investment option.

Stability in PPF and other schemes also

The government has kept the interest rate of not only GPF but also Public Provident Fund (PPF) at 7.1%. Apart from this, no changes have been made in small savings schemes like Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Senior Citizen Savings Scheme and National Savings Certificate. If we talk about Employees Provident Fund (EPF), then its interest rate remains 8.25%. This rate was fixed in 2023-24 and at present there has been no new change in it. That means private sector employees are getting slightly higher returns than GPF.
