- Hi-tech plan of Indian Railways!
- AI technology for track maintenance
- Then ‘composite sleepers’ will come for travel.
Indian Railways AI Technology: To make rail travel safer and more comfortable By Ministry of Railways Several measures have been announced. According to an official statement, these measures include the use of composite sleepers near bridges and at points and crossings. The railway ministry also said that AI-based technology will be used for track maintenance. Under this initiative, inspection vehicles will be fitted with special AI equipment.
Compared to the existing heavy iron and concrete sleepers, the new composite sleepers will be lighter in weight, have higher load bearing capacity and provide better cushioning. These sleepers are also easy to install and repair. These sleepers can be designed and deployed according to specific space requirements, which will provide more comfort to passengers, especially when traveling over bridges and points and crossings.
More durable than concrete and steel, these composite sleepers are made of composite materials, capable of bearing loads of up to 700 kilograms per square centimeter. This is also expected to reduce the maintenance cost of railways.

To assess the condition of the track, inspection vehicles will be equipped with Ground Penetration Radars, which will enable them to monitor the track with the help of AI. Additionally, Magnetic Particle Testing technology will be adopted to improve welding quality, making it easier to detect even the smallest defects.
According to the Ministry, these decisions reflect the Railways’ unwavering commitment to passenger safety and are concrete steps taken towards ensuring safe and comfortable travel. At the same time, Indian Railways is increasing the number of non-AC general and sleeper coaches, prioritizing cost-effective travel. To make rail travel cost-effective, passengers are being given an average fare discount of up to 45 percent. Railways provides passenger subsidy of approximately Rs 60,000 crore annually, with an additional subsidy of Rs 3,000 crore specifically for suburban networks such as Mumbai.
