TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's football team is preparing for the upcoming season without potential first-round draft pick Ty Simpson, who has left a significant vacancy at quarterback.
The Crimson Tide is evaluating two contenders, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, who are competing for the starting role during spring practice. Coach Kalen DeBoer indicated that the annual spring game on Saturday could provide insight into the ongoing quarterback battle.
Spring Practice Insights
DeBoer noted that both Mack and Russell have demonstrated a strong work ethic during spring practice. He commented, "Getting a lot of good reps. I love the aggressiveness that they have. They're not gun shy. They go and make plays, attacking whenever they get the right opportunities with the throws. And they're making the throws."
Replacing Simpson, who recorded 3,567 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while guiding Alabama to the College Football Playoff, is just one aspect of the Tide's offensive overhaul for the upcoming season. Alabama is tasked with replacing eight offensive starters, including key positions such as four offensive linemen and receiver Germie Bernard.
Coaching Changes and Key Players
Alabama has also appointed Bryan Ellis, previously the tight ends coach, as the new quarterbacks coach, succeeding Nick Sheridan, who moved to Michigan State as offensive coordinator. The coaching staff is focused on developing a cohesive offensive strategy amid these changes.
Ryan Coleman-Williams returns to the team with a new number and is expected to be a reliable target for the quarterback, whoever that may be, as they prepare for the season opener against East Carolina on September 5.
Quarterback Profiles
Mack, a redshirt junior, transferred to Alabama from Washington in 2024. Standing at 6-foot-6, he played in four games last season, completing 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns. His most significant performance was in the Rose Bowl, where he stepped in for Simpson during a loss to Indiana, completing 11 of 16 passes for 103 yards.
Russell, a redshirt freshman, is noted as the highest-rated recruit to join Alabama in recent history. At 6-foot-3, he participated in two games in 2025, achieving 11 completions out of 15 attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He expressed his development during Rose Bowl preparations, stating, "One of the biggest things this year was to get smarter. Understanding the offense, just building my confidence level."
Comparative Analysis
Coaches have highlighted the unique attributes of both quarterbacks. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb remarked on the athleticism of Russell, noting, "Obviously, Keelon is a really, really good athlete. I think his feet probably come into play." He also acknowledged Mack's capabilities, stating that both quarterbacks possess the talent to execute the game plan effectively.
Grubb emphasized the similarities between the two, indicating that their quick releases and arm talent are comparable. He noted, "There's not going to be a throw I have in the game plan that I have for one but couldn't do with the other."
