Karkala: Although the heat intensity in the coastal region is increasing day by day, the unseasonal rains falling two to three times a week in the foothills of the Western Ghats have proved to be a boon for Karkala. Due to these rains, the water level in the Mundli reservoir has risen, easing the fears of a summer water crisis for the town's residents.
The Mundli reservoir, which is the primary water source for the municipal limits, is now full. As the water storage is at its peak, excess water is being released. From this reservoir, which has a storage capacity of 3 MLD, water is being pumped 24 hours a day to the Ramasamudra sump. From there, it is supplied to various wards of the town and the Bandimatha tanks.
Public wells in rocky and hilly areas, including Banglegudde, Sadbhavanagara, and Paraneeru, have already gone dry. For the people in these regions, the water from the Bandimatha tank is the only source. Now that the Mundli reservoir is full, the drinking water problems for these residents have been averted.
A robust system has been put in place to supply water to the city, with two 125 HP jet pumps installed at Mundli. Municipal officials stated that water is being distributed continuously through two 40 HP pumps at the lower level of the Ramasamudra pump house and three pumps at the upper level.
The Lifeline Swarna
Originating in the foothills of the Western Ghats, this stream flows through Mala village’s Mallaru, Mulluru, Heranje, and Edappadi before joining the Kadari river. It then emerges from the village as "Ennehole," eventually transforming into the "Swarna" river. It provides water to the people via the dam at Mundli before flowing toward Udupi.
