Anthropic, a US based AI giant, is one of the most trending companies currently, rolling out new models almost every other day. As the company deals with rapid growth and expands its business. So, it is now facing a shortage of high-performance AI chips required to power its Claud AI family. The company is currently dependent on Nvidia, Google, and Broadcom for the supply of chips. As per a new report, the company is planning to develop its own chips to fulfil their growing demand.
A recent report published by Reuters claim that the company is exploring the possibility of developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chips to minimise its dependency on external suppliers and tackle the ongoing shortage of high-performace computing hardware.
Currently, the tech giant relies heavily on Amazon’s chip, particularly AWS Trainium and AWS Inference, as well as Google’s Tensor processing units (TPUs) and Nvidia GPUs to train and run its AI software and chatbot, Claude.
The demand for AI is skyrocketing in 2026 due to which the tech industry is facing the shortage of chips, and it has resulted in a massive price hike. This is pushing companies to think beyond simply buying hardware and instead build their own chips.
The media report further suggests that the company isn’t committing just yet. The report also claims that the idea is still in its early stagesand there is no final chip design or dedicated team in place yet. In simple terms, the company is testing the waters rather than diving in.
Anthropic Google Partnership
Meanwhile, the company has recently signed a long-term partnership with tech giant Google and Broadcom to work on tensor processing units (TPUs). The deal is part of a much larger push; the industry experts claim that the giants have invested $50 billion to expand computing infrastructure in the United States.
The company is strengthening its relationship with Google on one hand, and it is also finding ways to become more independent on the other hand. The business and tech experts cite that the company is doing so due to a simple reason: the ongoing chip shortage and the throat cut rising competition for the computing resources are pushing companies to secure more control over infrastructure.
What Does It Means For Google & Nvidia
If the company started developing its own chips, then for Google it could mean that one of its major AI customers may eventually depend less on its TPU ecosystem while for Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI GPU market, it indicates yet another major player looking to reduce its dependence on the company’s hardware.
Anthropic is not the first AI firm to consider building its own chips to back AI systems. Major tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have already gone down this path. Elon Musk has also recently announced TeraFab which is a new manufacturing facility backed by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. This facility will also work around developing 2nm chips.
However, the design of chips will not be an easy road for Anthropic. It can cost upward of $500 million and requires hiring highly specialised engineers, many of whom are already working at Apple, Nvidia, and Google.
Currently, the company has not shared any information regarding the chip, and it seems to have a clear intent on gaining more control over performance, cost and the availability of computing power.
