Synopsis

Mohali residents face a ₹1,000 fine from April 15 for water wastage during morning hours, including hose pipe use for lawns, vehicles, or cleaning. Repeat offenders will be fined ₹2,000, with a third violation leading to water supply disconnection. This strict measure aims to manage demand during peak hours.

Starting April 15, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) will impose a ₹1,000 fine on residents found wasting water during morning hours. This includes using hose pipes for watering lawns and plants, washing vehicles, or cleaning floors, according to Hindustan Times.

Repeat offenders will face a higher penalty of ₹2,000, while a third violation will lead to disconnection of the water supply.

In cases where water connections are cut due to repeated violations, restoration will only be allowed after:

  • Payment of a ₹5,000 penalty
  • Submission of an affidavit
  • Approval from the competent authority
The penalty amount will be added directly to the consumer’s water bill.

Decision Taken During Final House Meeting

According to Hindustan Times, the decision was made during the final House meeting of the MC’s five-year tenure on Thursday. Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu said, “Strict enforcement is essential, especially during peak supply hours when demand is high,” he said.

Water Supply Managed by Multiple Authorities

The city’s water supply system is handled by different authorities across regions:

The water supply and sanitation department manages Phases 1 to 11, Sectors 70, 71, and 48-C, Industrial Area Phases 1 to 5, and villages like Mataur, Shahimajra, and Madanpura.

The Municipal Corporation oversees Sectors 65A, 66 to 69, 76 to 80, and Industrial Area Phases 6 to 9, including Phase 8A and 8B.

Villages such as Sohana and Kumbra also fall under the MC’s jurisdiction for water and sewerage services.
