About 79.84 percent voting was recorded on Thursday in the by-election held on Dharmanagar assembly seat in North district of Tripura. According to officials, out of a total of 46,142 voters, a large number of people exercised their franchise.

Voting, which began at 7 am, continued till 4 pm without any major disruption at 55 polling stations. During this period, no untoward incident was reported, due to which the election process remained peaceful.

Although there were technical glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs) at some polling stations, the Election Commission team immediately repaired or replaced the machines, due to which voting was not affected. There may be a slight increase in the voting percentage in the final figures.

A total of 46,142 voters, including 23,758 women voters, were eligible to decide the fate of the six candidates on this seat. The administration and police had made elaborate arrangements to make the elections fair and transparent.

Out of 55 polling stations, 11 stations were manned entirely by women staff, while two stations each were manned by disabled staff and youth teams, exemplifying inclusive participation.

The Dharmanagar seat has been a stronghold of the Congress and the BJP since 2008, while the CPI(M) had last won here in 2003. This time the contest was multi-cornered, making the election quite interesting.

The main candidates include BJP’s Jahar Chakraborty, Congress’s Chayan Bhattacharya and Left Front’s Amitabh Dutta. Apart from this, other parties and an independent candidate also tried their luck in the election field.

It is noteworthy that this by-election has been held due to the death of Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen on 26 December 2025. He was 72 years old and was ill for a long time.

Counting of votes will take place on May 4, after which the election results will be declared.
