The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already provided high-octane drama on the field, but the latest headlines Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Regarding off-field discipline. As the tournament enters a crucial middle stage, the governing body has turned its focus to match-day operations, with the aim of streamlining performances and reducing unnecessary clutter around the field of play. This season, characterized by high scores and tight finishes, now faces a new layer of administrative stringency.
BCCI implements updated field rules for non-playing teams in IPL 2026
To standardize the match environment and protect commercial interests, BCCI has introduced the ‘Power of 16’ rule. Under this instruction, only the 16 players officially named on the team sheet at the toss are allowed to cross the boundary line. This is a significant change from previous seasons where any member of the 25-man squad from any franchise could be seen running onto the field with hydration or tactical advice. Now, routine tasks like carrying drinks, bats or gloves are strictly reserved only for the five named substitutes in that 16-member list.
Outside the field, the BCCI has implemented ‘density limits’ for the perimeter. No more than five players wearing bibs may be allowed near the boundary line at any time, whether or not they are part of the active 16. Other team members are required to remain in the dugout. Importantly, the movement of players sitting on the bench in the ‘grey zone’ between the boundary line and the LED advertising board is now restricted. Its main purpose is to ensure that sight lines remain clear for broadcast cameras and that high-value sponsorship boards are not blocked by ‘accidentally resting’ players.
These updates strengthen existing rules, specifically section 11.5.2 (controlling effective drink dispensing) and section 24.1.4 (mandating the use of training bibs). By tightening these protocols, the BCCI aims to prevent time wasting and maintain a professional aesthetic in line with the global status of the league.
