Vietnam’s General Party Secretary and State President To Lam, along with his spouse and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay a state visit to China from April 14-17.

The visit will be made at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping, and his spouse, announced in a communique by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The trip follows the National Assembly’s April 7 resolution appointing To Lam as State President for the 2026-2031 term. This marks the second time he has concurrently held the dual roles of Party General Secretary and State President, having first done so in 2024.

Vietnam and China share a long history of diplomatic relations, with China being the first country to establish formal ties with Vietnam on Jan. 18, 1950. The two nations elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2008.

In 2023, the neighboring countries issued a joint statement to further advance their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. This agreement focused on promoting the development of a strategically significant community with a shared future.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bilateral relations have maintained strong positive momentum and achieved significant results in recent years.

Economic ties remain highly robust. In 2025, China was Vietnam’s largest trading partner while Vietnam stood as China’s largest trading partner within ASEAN and its fourth-largest globally on a single-country basis.

Bilateral trade reached US$256.4 billion last year. This economic integration has continued into the current year, with China maintaining its position as Vietnam’s top trading partner in the first two months, recording a total trade turnover of $66.7 billion.

Investment and tourism also highlight the depth of the partnership. China ranked second in foreign investment in 2025, registering a total capital of $5.96 billion.

Vietnam welcomed 5.28 million Chinese visitors last year, accounting for a quarter of the country’s total international arrivals.
