Baramati by-election: The by-election to be held on Baramati seat of Maharashtra now seems to be one-sided. Sunetra Pawar, wife of late NCP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, is considered almost certain to win unopposed as Congress has decided to withdraw its candidate. Voting on this seat is to be held on April 23.

Congress took steps back in ‘respect’

Congress withdrew its candidate on Thursday and said that this decision has been taken out of respect for Ajit Pawar. The party had fielded Akash More for the by-election, but now he has withdrawn his nomination. Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal said that the party had fielded the candidate only to show ideological differences, but Ajit Pawar’s demise made everyone emotional.

Chief Minister Fadnavis also appealed

Before this decision, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had talked to the Congress state president on phone and requested him to remove the candidate. Apart from this, leaders of Sharad Pawar faction had also made the same appeal to Congress. These included Supriya Sule and Rohit Pawar. According to sources, Sunetra Pawar herself contacted the Congress leadership and cited Ajit Pawar’s old relations.

Died in an accident

Ajit Pawar died on 28 January. His chartered plane crashed while landing at Baramati airport. Baramati seat has been a stronghold of the Pawar family for a long time. This seat remained with Ajit Pawar from the 1991 by-election till his death. Before that, this seat was with Sharad Pawar since 1967. After this decision of Congress, now the contest in Baramati by-election seems to be over. In such a situation, it is almost certain that Sunetra Pawar will be elected unopposed.
