Assam Assembly Elections 2026 started with voting at 7 am on Thursday. Voters started arriving at polling stations in different parts of the state since morning, but the kind of enthusiasm seen in Jorhat district made the election atmosphere even more lively. Long queues were formed in the initial hours itself, which clearly indicated that this time people want to participate enthusiastically in this festival of democracy.
The voting process is going on peacefully and systematically at a total of 886 polling stations in Jorhat district. According to the administration, about 7.1 lakh voters are going to exercise their franchise here. There was continuous movement of people at the polling stations since morning, due to which the voting percentage is expected to increase.
Tremendous enthusiasm was visible since morning
As soon as voting started, long queues were seen at many booths. People from all sections – youth, women and elders – came in large numbers to cast their votes. Election officials said that the pace of voting in the initial phase was satisfactory and there was no news of any major irregularities.
The local administration had already made concrete arrangements regarding security and arrangements, the effect of which was clearly visible in the voting process. Voting is going on peacefully in the entire district.
Leaders voted, called it a celebration of democracy
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita exercised her franchise in Ward No. 15 of Jorhat Assembly Constituency. After voting he also appealed to the people to cast their vote.
He said,
“I have cast my vote. This is the biggest celebration of democracy. I appeal to all citizens to come forward and play their role in strengthening democracy.”
Congress candidate expressed confidence
Congress candidate from Jorhat Gaurav Gogoi also cast his vote at polling booth number 52 located at DCB Girls School. After voting, he described people’s enthusiasm as a positive sign.
He said,
“I am very confident after seeing the participation of voters. People are coming forward understanding the responsibility. The real power of democracy is in the hands of the people, and that is coming to the fore now.”
Strong participation of young voters
The participation of youth is especially visible in this election. Pooja Das, who came to vote for the second time, talked about giving priority to development.
He said,
“This is my second vote. I want that whatever government is formed, it should work for the people and focus on development.”
This enthusiasm of the youth is being considered a positive sign for democracy, as it shows that the new generation is becoming aware of their rights and responsibilities.
Administration’s watch, peaceful voting continues
The Election Commission and local administration are continuously monitoring the voting process. Along with the deployment of security forces, special surveillance is being maintained in sensitive areas.
Officials say that polling is going on peacefully so far and the voting percentage is expected to increase further as the day progresses.
