TheBBC has announced the release date for its newest crime drama Mint and viewers haven't got long to wait.

Mint has been crafted by Scrapper's Charlotte Regan and is characterised as a story of "soaring romance and crushing heartbreak, love, infatuation, darkness and tragedy".

The eight-episode BBC series, which boasts an impressive cast, centres on a crime family's daughter Shannon, portrayed by The Brutalist's Emma Laird.

She develops a romantic connection with Arran, played by acting newcomer Ben Coyle-Larner, better known as musician Loyle Carner, who hails from a rival crime family, reports the Mirror.

"While Shannon and Arran are navigating their forbidden romance, elsewhere things are imploding for Shannon's family," the official synopsis reads. "Early in our series, Dylan decides to step down as the head of the family for mysterious reasons. Sam, Dylan's second in command, steps up to take over, though his diverging tactics start to raise alarm across our series."

The synopsis adds: "In the wake of Dylan's decision, instead of focusing on the crime world or the politics of succession, we're swept into the distinct emotional worlds of Shannon's family, her parents, Dylan and Cat, her older brother Luke and her indomitable grandma Ollie."

The BBC has now revealed that the opening two episodes will broadcast on Monday (April 20) evening on BBC One at 9pm, with all eight instalments accessible earlier that day on BBC iPlayer.

BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt had previously described the series as "a crime drama like no other".

She went on to say: "Championing the females in the family, it shows a very different side to what a life of crime is really like for those who live alongside that world. I'm over the moon that Charlotte has chosen to work with the BBC on her first TV series."

Meanwhile, writer and director Charlotte Regan remarked: "I had a little cry the other day thinking about how incredible this cast are. Absolute emotional wreck.

"But I honestly can't imagine these characters being brought into the world by better human beings. Every single one of them is going to smash it and I feel so grateful to have them all onboard."

Viewers have swiftly taken to social media to express their enthusiasm for the upcoming drama, with one Instagram user writing: "Excited!" Another responded: "Can't wait."

A third commented: "I'm so excited to watch it. It's the day before my birthday. I love it." One enthusiastic fan posted: "I'm already SAT." Meanwhile, a fellow BBC viewer chimed in: "What a cast!"

Mint will air from Monday, April 20 on BBC One from 9pm and all episodes will also be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am that day
