Meta tightens teen safety on instagram with default 13+ account controls

Meta Platforms has implemented an updated safety policy for Instagram that will automatically place users under the age of 18 into a 13+ content and privacy setting by default, according to official announcements and open reports.

Under the new policy, teenage Instagram users those under 18 will be automatically assigned a 13+ setting designed to align with widely understood “PG‑13” content standards. The change reflects Meta’s effort to ensure that teens are exposed primarily to content deemed appropriate for their age group while using the platform.

The 13+ default means that teen users may see content similar to what is generally considered acceptable in a movie rated PG‑13  which may include mild language or scenarios but they will be shielded from material that falls into more mature categories and frequently filtered out by these updated settings.

Importantly, under this update teens will not be able to switch their accounts to a less restrictive or adult‑like mode on their own. Any such change or opt‑out from the default setting requires the explicit approval of a parent or guardian. This parental consent requirement is central to the new safety framework, reinforcing oversight by caregivers and placing control of content settings in their hands.

Meta says the refreshed setup builds on earlier teen account protections introduced on Instagram, reflecting feedback from parents and safety experts and drawing inspiration from familiar age guidance frameworks. Parents also have access to a stricter “Limited Content” mode that offers additional filtering options if they choose.

The update is positioned as part of a broader strategy by Meta to enhance online safety for younger users at a time when social media platforms face increased scrutiny over how content affects teen wellbeing. By defaulting under‑18 accounts to more protective settings and requiring parental approval for changes, Meta aims to balance user experience with added layers of accountability and guidance.

Parents and guardians can monitor and manage these settings through Instagram’s in‑app controls and parental supervision tools that provide information on what their teens are exposed to and how their account settings are managed.

This development comes amid ongoing discussions across the tech industry and regulatory bodies about how best to protect children and adolescents from harmful or inappropriate content online, while still enabling age‑appropriate engagement and learning experiences.
