New Delhi. A heated debate took place at a high-level virtual review meeting of the Election Commission during preparations for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Anurag Yadav, a senior IAS officer of 2000 batch of Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been removed from the post of General Observer of Cooch Behar South assembly constituency.

294 observers participated in the virtual meeting held in Kolkata on 8 April. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar asked Anurag Yadav basic information about his area, such as the number of polling stations. Anurag Yadav delayed in replying and could not give correct information. The Chief Election Commissioner became angry at this and said “go back home”. In response, Anurag Yadav said, “You cannot talk to us like this. We have given 25 years in this IAS service.” There was silence in the meeting.
Election Commission’s action: The Election Commission considered this incident as serious negligence. According to the Commission, not maintaining basic information in the sensitive Cooch Behar region is not acceptable. Adopting a zero tolerance policy, Anurag Yadav was immediately removed from the post and a new observer was appointed in his place. Commission sources clarified that the main reason for his removal was lack of professional preparation, not debate.
Who is Anurag Yadav?Anurag Yadav is a senior officer of UP cadre and currently holds the post of Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) in Uttar Pradesh. He was recently appointed observer for West Bengal elections. Now he is returning back to his native department in UP.
