Tehran. Iran again closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israel’s stepped up attacks in Lebanon, putting a recent ceasefire in jeopardy. The US has demanded immediate opening of the strait and tried to keep peace talks on track. Both the US and Iran have hailed the deal as a victory, even as drone and missile attacks continue in the region.
Meanwhile, Israel has intensified attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Commercial and residential areas in Beirut were attacked. At least 182 people died in these attacks on Wednesday. Speaker of Iran’s parliament Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf said the proposed talks are “illogical” because the US has violated the terms of the ceasefire.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said ending the conflict in Lebanon was part of the ceasefire, while Israel and the US have denied this. White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt called the closure of the strait “completely unacceptable” and reiterated calls for it to be reopened.
There are differences between the two parties regarding the terms of the agreement. Iran has indicated it may collect fees from ships passing through the strait, while the US is opposed. According to experts, there is uncertainty over the sustainability of the ceasefire due to increasing violence and differences in the region.
