In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at Indore's Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH), one of the largest government hospitals in Madhya Pradesh, successfully removed a 3-inch live fish from the throat of a one-year-old child, saving his life.

How the Incident Happened

The incident occurred while the child’s family was cleaning a home aquarium. During the process, the child’s elder sibling was holding a fish. The one-year-old, who was playing nearby, accidentally put the live fish into his mouth. The fish quickly slipped into the back of his throat (larynx) and became lodged.

When the child was brought to the hospital, his condition was critical. The fish blocking his throat made it impossible for him to breathe. He was bleeding continuously from the mouth, his body had started turning blue due to lack of oxygen, and he was unable to even cry.

A Delicate and Risky Operation

A team led by ENT specialist Dr. Yamini Gupta acted swiftly. The situation was extremely challenging as the fish was not only long but also moving inside the throat. Its sharp fins and gills posed a serious risk of tearing the child’s airway.

Using a careful endoscopic procedure, doctors successfully extracted the live Gourami fish from the child’s throat.

The child is now stable, recovering well, and is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.
