BCCI Imposes Strict Field Access Rules in IPL 2026, Limits Substitute Movement

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a whirlwind of activity. You’ve got players warming up by the boundary, substitutes dashing in with drinks, and messages flying around mid-over. But it looks like that scene is about to shift.

In a new directive, the BCCI has told all franchises that only the 16 players listed on the official team sheet will be allowed on the field during matches. Anyone outside that group will have to stay in the dugout, with no movement allowed between the boundary rope and the advertising boards. While this might not seem like a big deal for fans, it does show that the BCCI is tightening the reins a bit.

With this new rule, players who are benched and not part of the designated 16 can’t step onto the field for any reason. That means no carrying drinks, no delivering tactical messages, and no bringing in equipment like bats.

There’s also a limit on how many players can hang out near the boundary line. Only five players wearing bibs can be in that area at any time. These five can come from the named 16 or the rest of the squad, but the total can’t go over five.

For teams that are used to having a larger support crew close to the action, this is a significant change. Squads usually have around 25 players, and until now, many of them would be actively involved around the boundary during matches. Team officials have confirmed that these new instructions were shared recently. This latest directive builds on existing rules in the Match Playing Conditions, specifically clauses 11.5.2 and 24.1.4.

Clause 11.5.2 already controls how drinks can be taken onto the field, allowing it only in specific situations and with umpire approval. Clause 24.1.4 requires non-playing squad members to wear bibs if they’re in the playing area.

What the BCCI has done now is eliminate any grey areas. Instead of leaving things open to interpretation, there’s now a clear line on who can and can’t be on the field. The reasoning behind this move hasn’t been officially explained, but it could be about keeping things disciplined, reducing on-field clutter, or tightening control over in-game communication.
