Cricket Gully | April 9, 2026 1:39 PM CST

The Wankhede Stadium will host a grand ceremony to honour former India cricketer Ravi Shastri, with a stand set to be named after him at the iconic venue. The event will also feature Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar currently plays for the Mumbai Indians team in the 2026 Indian Premier League season. The team has lost two of their first three matches and now sits seventh on the points table.

The Wankhede Stadium will host a historic event on April 8 when the Mumbai Cricket Association will present their tribute to Shastri. The Level 1 stand below the press box will officially carry the name “Ravi Shastri Stand,” recognising his immense contribution as a player, captain, and coach.

The ceremony will also include Suryakumar Yadav. Devendra Pandey reports that Devendra Fadnavis will honor him for his role in leading India to victory at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. India secured their second consecutive T20 World Cup championship under his captaincy by defeating New Zealand national cricket team in a one-sided final match.

Although Suryakumar had difficulties batting during the tournament his captaincy received praise from both fans and experts.  Ravi Shastri will remain the central figure of the event as the stadium honours him with a dedicated stand. Shastri played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India and later guided the team through one of its most successful Test phases as head coach, including historic series wins in Australia.

Shastri and Suryakumar will join the MCA in honouring other Mumbai legends through the stadium gate dedication ceremony. Gate No. 3 will carry the name of Dilip Sardesai, while Gate No. 5 and Gate No. 6 will honour Diana Edulji and Eknath Solkar, respectively. The MCA had earlier honoured Rohit Sharma at the venue, and this move continues its effort to celebrate key contributors to the game.

The Mumbai Indians faced a challenging match during IPL 2026 because the Rajasthan Royals defeated them decisively in a rain-affected game that took place in Guwahati. The loss caused their team to lose momentum which made captain Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar show their disappointment in the dressing room.

The match turned into an 11-over contest for each team because of rain. However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated early, adding 80 runs in just four overs.

The Rajasthan Royals used their energetic beginning to reach a total of 150 runs with three wickets remaining. The Mumbai Indians failed to establish their batting rhythm because they kept losing players and ended their innings at 123 runs with nine players out.
