A Coventry man has been handed a 25-year sentence after pleading guilty to a decades-long campaign of rape and sexual abuse against a young girl.
John Evans, 59, carried out the assaults across the course of the 1990s. His victim was a child when the abuse began and had reached her early teens before it stopped. She kept her ordeal private for years before finding the courage to contact West Midlands Police in 2023.
At Warwick Crown Court on March 31, Evans was handed a 20-year term, extended by five years, after admitting rape and indecent assault. A lifetime entry on the sex offender register was also imposed.
Faced with the evidence against him, Evans told detectives nothing of substance - only that he had known the girl. He offered no account of what had taken place.
West Midlands Police said historical cases of this kind are investigated with the same rigour as recent offences, however much time has passed since they occurred.
"It is through the bravery of the survivors that cases are built and offenders brought to justice," a force spokesperson said.
