Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission over the removal of names from the voter list and said that her party will again approach the court to oppose the removal of names of voters from the voter list.
Mamata Banerjee’s comments come after the names of about 91 lakh voters were removed from the voter list on completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in the state. Taking aim at her main rival BJP over the voter list revision exercise, Banerjee said, “You will not be able to defeat Trinamool Congress by removing people’s names from the voter list. We will go to court again to protest against the removal of the name.
Banerjee had argued in the Supreme Court last February, in which she had sought intervention in the SIR process. According to the Election Commission data, there were a total of 7.66 crore voters in October 2025, out of which the names of more than 90.83 lakh voters have been deleted, which shows that the proportion of voters deleting names is more than 11.85 percent. Criticizing the Election Commission over the SIR process, he said, “We will fight a legal battle to get the names included in the list as per the Constitution. If people cannot vote, then what is the need to form a tribunal? And then you are saying that the list has been ‘frozen’. What is this? We will challenge it and try to understand it.”
Addressing an election rally at Arambag in Hooghly district, Trinamool Congress chief Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to manipulate voter lists and offering money to woo voters. Banerjee accused the Election Commission of threatening people over phone. He claimed, “The Election Commission is working at the behest of the BJP. He is threatening and scaring people by calling them.”
Later, addressing a rally in Balagarh in the same district, Banerjee warned that voting for the BJP would mean “sacrificing fish, meat and speaking Bengali”. Banerjee claimed, “In BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, people are not allowed to eat eggs, fish or meat. Same will happen here if BJP comes to power.”
