Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, Iran is now preparing to take a big step to increase its earnings. According to reports, Iran will collect toll tax on oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This is the same sea route through which about 20% of the world's oil and LNG passes. Let us tell you how much Iran can earn annually from toll collection from the Strait of Hormuz.
According to ET report, Iran can impose a transit charge of about $ 1 on every barrel of oil. If this plan is implemented, the country can earn a huge amount of 70 to 80 billion dollars annually i.e. about 6.43 lakh crore to 7.4 lakh crore rupees. The special thing is that this amount can be more than Iran's traditional oil export income.
I have earned so much before
If we look at the figures, Iran had earned about $ 41.1 billion from oil exports in 2023 and $ 46.7 billion in 2024. At the same time, its daily oil income has also increased rapidly to about $139 million in 2026. At present, Iran is exporting about 1.6 million barrels of oil per day.
However, the situation is not completely normal. Amidst the increasing conflict with America and Israel, Iran had closed this waterway for some time, which had a major impact on global oil supply and led to a rise in prices. Later, on the initiative of Donald Trump, there was a two-week temporary ceasefire between America and Iran, after which the situation calmed down to some extent. Trump also indicated that the two countries can work together to protect this important sea route.
shipping affected
The impact of this tension was clearly visible on shipping as well. About 187 oil tankers, carrying 172 million barrels of oil, were stuck on the way. At the same time, there was a crowd of more than 1000 ships in the Gulf area, which may take more than two weeks to normalize. Now everyone's eyes are on whether Iran really implements toll tax. If this happens, it could not only prove to be a game changer for its economy but could also change the direction of the global oil market.
