Varuthini Ekadashi fasting story: Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month is celebrated as Varuthini Ekadashi, which is falling on 13 April 2026 this year. According to religious beliefs, special worship of 'Varaha' incarnation of Lord Vishnu is done on this holy day. The word 'Varuthini' means armor or protector, hence it is believed that whoever observes this fast with full devotion, gets protection from all kinds of troubles. The glory of this holy date is so much that its result is said to be equivalent to ten thousand years of penance. Devotees immersed in the devotion of Lord Vishnu purify their souls by doing charity and fasting on this day, which brings happiness and peace in the family.
Mythology of Varuthini Ekadashi
According to mythology, in ancient times, King Mandhata ruled on the banks of river Narmada, who was extremely charitable and ascetic. Once when the king was deep in meditation in the forest, a wild bear attacked him and started chewing his feet. The king did not panic and continued his penance and remembered Lord Vishnu in his mind. Hearing the call of the devotee, the Lord immediately appeared there and killed the bear with his Sudarshan Chakra. The king's leg was seriously injured, seeing which he was very sad. Then God advised him to fast on Varuthini Ekadashi of Vaishakh Krishna Paksha and told that due to this his leg will be cured again.
Salvation of incomplete leg and beginning of fasting tradition
As per the orders of God, King Mandhata went to Mathura and observed a strict fast on Varuthini Ekadashi and worshiped the idol of Lord Varaha with true heart. Due to the effect of the fast and the immense grace of the Lord, the king's injured leg became as healthy and beautiful as before. Seeing this miracle the king was extremely happy and since then the tradition of this holy fast became famous all over the world. This story teaches us that when we seek refuge in God without getting distracted in difficult times, He definitely protects us. Even today devotees consider this day as the door to good fortune and salvation. This fast observed with a true heart has the power to eliminate the physical and mental troubles of a person.
Purity of food and drink during fasting
It is very important to follow the eating rules on Varuthini Ekadashi so that one can get the full benefit of the fast. On this day, one should consume only satvik food and avoid consuming grains, pulses or salt. It is best to offer only fresh fruits, dry fruits and milk items prepared in the home kitchen. Instead of packaged chips or canned juices from the market, preference should be given to homemade sago khichdi or buckwheat flour. Accepting Prasad while sitting with loved ones brings peace to the mind and also increases mutual love. This food prepared with pure feelings gives energy to the body and also maintains the dignity of the fast.
