House Divided Between Two States Causes Family Distress

A house straddling the border of two states has been split into two sections, resulting in one half being located in Punjab and the other in Haryana. This division has created significant challenges for the family residing there. Reports indicate that this action was taken following directives from the Haryana Power Corporation, which mandated the construction of a wall to separate the two sections of the house.

The property belongs to Jagvanti Devi, who expanded her home into Haryana. Approximately three months ago, she applied for an electricity connection, but the power corporation raised concerns about the house being situated across two states. They stipulated that a wall must be built to separate the Punjab portion before the connection could be granted. To comply, Jagvanti Devi constructed a wall inside her home, effectively isolating the Punjab section.

Located in the town of Dabwali, at the southernmost tip of Haryana, this house is uniquely divided. When Haryana was formed in 1966, the boundary with Punjab was established, leading to many homes along the border being split. Jagvanti Devi's daughter-in-law, Rita, shared that Jagvanti was married to Raunak Ram and had built the house in the Punjab section.

According to Rita, they had been using electricity and water connections from Punjab. Recently, they constructed additional space in the Haryana section and began paying property taxes to the Dabwali municipal council. While the Public Health Department issued a water connection, the Southern Haryana Power Distribution Corporation raised objections regarding the electricity connection. Surendra Monga, Jagvanti's son, mentioned that their security deposits had been returned twice due to these objections, prompting them to build the wall.

When approached for comments, Yugaank Jain, an official from the power corporation, stated that he was not fully aware of the situation. He mentioned that he would seek a report from JE Ravindra Pal regarding the matter and would be able to provide more information afterward. However, he emphasized that it should not be the case that a family is compelled to build a wall in their home due to the power corporation's requirements.
